This book also provides an in-depth explication of transformational leadership and transformative learning theories as they correlate to current literature on the lack of male leaders in the black church.
Transforming Male Leaders in the Twenty-First Century establishes a theoretical foundation using a theological, biblical, and historical perspective to undergird the subject matter of transforming black males in the local church. This book also examines the work of leading theorists in male leadership. This book is a solution to a male leadership crisis in the black home, church, and community. This book will enlighten all leaders regarding the leadership crisis in America and sound the bell for transformation across the globe! Wayne pastor pens his first book

The Rev. Dr. Manuel Howard wears a lot of hats. He’s pastor of the St. John AME Church in Wayne, an adjunct professor at the Reformed Episcopal Seminary, a police chaplain for Radnor Township and Delaware County, a public speaker and now an author. His first book, “Transforming Male Leaders in the Twenty-First Century-Church Through Training in Transformative Learning and Transformational Leadership” was recently published by Christian Faith Publishing.
Howard, known by his nickname “Bumper,” given to him by his foster mother, Connie Sydnor, who with her husband, George Sydnor, took Howard in after his 16-year-old mother could not raise him.
“You didn’t realize it at the time,” Howard said. “If you will, it always has some challenges with foster care, trying to understand why your birth parents were unable to care for you. I was blessed and fortunate to land with the Sydnor family and I’ve been a part of the family.” Howard, 43, grew up in the Garrett Hill section of Radnor and played basketball and football for Radnor High School. He went on to play football while studying at West Chester University, where he majored in sociology.
“I grew up in the church, Bethel AME Church was our home church in Bryn Mawr,” said Howard. “The lord brought me back to lead in that way. The seminary kind of solidified my call.
In 2009 he met with the head of the Reform Episcopal Academy and learned there were scholarships available and encouraged him to come and study there.
“He said, ‘If you do, your life will never be the same,” said Howard. “So off I went. It was a transformational experience…
It was really a life-changing time for me. I kept on going and finished seminary in 2013.”
He continued in the ministry and “the lord opened the door for me to get my doctorate at Payne Theological Seminary in Wilberforce, Ohio.” That degree is in transformational leadership, which is the topic of his book.
“My life has been transformational from the beginning,” said Howard. “In foster care, the journey growing from a young man trying to find himself, playing sports, using that as an emotional outlet for anger, foster care experience. Internally, this book really touched my heart. God is using me to help transform people in mind body and spirit in the church community and schools. I’m so thankful I was able to complete my doctorate which gave me the tools to write and publish my book.”
Howard will be pastor at St. John’s for three years in June. His church may be merging with the United Methodist Church in Garrett Hill, which has seen lagging membership in recent years. The two congregations are “prayerfully considering a merger,” he said.
He remembers going in the annual Strawberry Festival that United Methodist used to have when he was growing up.
“It was huge then,” said Howard. “That’s when it was really a thriving church. This is something that’s never been done, a merger between an AME and a Methodist church.” It will take
“transforming minds, hearts, and culture and fusing one spirt,” Howard said. “The Lord has given me the vision to lead this transformation. These are two wonderful churches, two great communities. I happen to be a part of both of them.”
Meanwhile, his book is geared toward male leaders, he said.
Men, especially African American males in leadership, have been on a decline in churches, homes, and the community in recent decades, he said. He hopes the book will help “spark a transformational revival in our male leaders,” he said.
Howard was extremely sad to learn of the death of basketball great Kobe Bryant, who he remembers playing against in high school. He is promoting a Change.org petition for Bryant's name and image to become the new NBA logo.
"My heart goes out to his family and to the families of the others who were killed in the helicopter crash," Howard said.
Howard is the husband of First Lady Vanessa Howard and the father of Marcus, 17, Zion, 9, and Matthew 16 months. The family resides in Collegeville.
“Transforming Male Leaders in the Twenty-First Century-Church Through Training in Transformative Learning and Transformational Leadership” is available at Barnes & Noble, Amazon and other booksellers.
